Akustika+ house of polish culture in vilnius
“Where sound and architecture come together, culture and creativity begin. The new space at the Polish Cultural House – the main event hall – is another testament to how important it is to have a high-quality and aesthetically pleasing environment for creativity. We are grateful for being invited. The ‘Akustika plius’ team was delighted to design sound insulation, architectural acoustics, and interior for it.
Let us briefly tell you how it all began and how it ended.
Beginning:
First, there was a building, the new wing of the Polish Cultural House (LKN), and then came the hall with a unique function. The first mistake was the sequential nature of the project. There were no more mistakes, but there was a long process until we reached what we are proud of today.
The Process:
First, we visually assessed the critical points in the space from an acoustic perspective. We listened in silence. We fired a few shots and listened again. We considered possible scenarios for the hall’s use, such as speeches, theater performances, and more. After summarizing the results and listening to the client, we decided to design a multifunctional hall with adjustable acoustics and an ever-changing interior for the audience.
Acoustics. Interior:
We all understand that there are no universally acoustically perfect spaces. A hall designed for theater cannot meet the expectations of classical music performers. These are two different acoustic directions. In the case of LKN, the focus was on speakers, actors, and musicians with amplification. Based on acoustic research results, the hall was designed with the appropriate placement of acoustic absorbing and diffusing materials, ensuring an even distribution of sound waves, and absorption in specific areas. Central ceiling panels were designed to help direct the speaker’s speech towards the audience and, if needed, enhance the acoustics. Mobile acoustic elements in the space allow for changes in reverberation time, adapting to three acoustic scenarios: speeches, theater, and musical performances with amplification. Mechanized, controllable acoustic fiber-absorbing structures allow the main hall to be used for theater, speakers, and popular music artists. Reflecting the flexibility of acoustics in the hall, the interior was also designed to be dynamic and ever-changing. Triangular acoustic slats made of natural veneer change the hall’s color scheme as the audience moves. The rich wine red turns into black, and from the stage, you can see another color accent. In the black hall, a balcony with a bordo color finish overlooks the stage.
Conclusion:
We do not forget our projects. We feel a little sadness when leaving our spaces. We will cherish every visit to the hall, not as authors but as guests and spectators. Thank you.
